What Coast FIRE means
Coast FIRE describes reaching a point where your existing investments could grow enough to fund retirement later, without further contributions. You would still need to pay your living costs until then, for example through work. It does not mean you can retire today.
Choose your retirement age and spending goal to estimate how much would need to be invested now. Compare that amount with your existing portfolio and explore how more time, a different spending goal or different growth assumptions changes the starting amount needed.
Reading your result
The Coast FIRE target today is the amount needed now under your assumptions. A gap means your investments are below it; a surplus means they are above it. For example, at age 30 with a target age of 60, the calculator allows 30 years of growth with no new deposits.
The future balance and its value in today’s money are shown separately, so a larger number caused partly by rising prices is not confused with more spending power. Equal current and target ages leave no time for growth and produce the ordinary FIRE target.
What could change the outcome
The projection assumes steady growth and inflation. Actual returns can be lower or negative; taxes, pensions and retirement withdrawals are not included. A surplus is not proof that you can safely stop saving. If investments grow more slowly than prices, the amount needed today can exceed the retirement target in today’s money. Use investment growth to explore adding more money over time.
The maths behind the estimate
The retirement target is annual spending divided by the withdrawal rate, increased for inflation until the target age. The calculator works backwards using the assumed investment growth to find the amount needed today. It uses the exact relationship between growth and inflation, rather than simply subtracting inflation from the return. See the methodology for details.
