What financial runway means
Your financial runway is the time your savings could give you before they run out while covering regular bills. It can help you explore a career break, time between jobs or a reduction in income. Unlike an emergency-fund target, this calculator allows for money that would still be coming in.
Enter savings you can use, monthly expenses and reliable monthly income. If income does not cover your expenses, the calculator estimates how long savings could fill the gap. Trying a lower budget or a different income amount shows how your breathing room could change.
Reading your result
For example, savings of 12,000, expenses of 2,000 a month and continuing income of 500 leave 1,500 a month to cover from savings. That gives eight months of runway. Complete months funded counts only full months; money left for part of another month appears separately.
If income covers your expenses, funds do not deplete under these assumptions. That means these regular bills would not use up the savings; an unexpected cost or change in income could still do so. The schedule shows up to 120 months, even if the estimated runway is longer.
What to allow for
The estimate keeps expenses and income unchanged. It does not include rising prices, investment growth, taxes added separately or surprise bills. Include relevant costs in your budget and count income you expect to keep receiving. Use emergency fund to plan a cash buffer based on months of essential expenses instead.
The maths behind the estimate
Monthly shortfall = monthly expenses − reliable monthly income. When that is positive, runway in months = available funds ÷ monthly shortfall. Full months are rounded down and remaining funds are shown separately. If there is no shortfall, no running-out date is calculated.
